Less than three months after it made its maiden voyage across Lake Ontario, Rochester's fast ferry will be suspending service.
Rochester's mayor confirms that Canadian American Transportation Systems will suspend operations after the Spirit of Ontario pulls into the Port of Rochester tongiht around 9pm.
The reason the breeze will suspend services: CATS has run out of money.
Mayor William Johnson says two issues forced CATS decision to suspend the ferry service: Canadian customs costs CATS said all along it had not expected and the failure by American customs services to allow the fast ferry to carry commerical traffic on board.
CATS had expected to make thousands of dollars a day carryig freight trucks across the lake. Even with high-passenger use through the second half of the summer, the loss of that expected revenue forced the company to suspend service.
Johnson had spoken with Ddominic DeLucia, CATS owner, in an effort to convince the service to merely cut back on its runs. Instead, CATS had decided to suspend services.
Johnson said the City of Rochester plans to continue pressuring federal and canadian authorities to remedy the issues that would allow the ferry to resume service.
