(Rochester, NY) 10/04/04 - Two women were shot Monday when they showed up for work at an RIT dining hall. Monroe County Sheriff's deputies are now searching for the gunmen who they say intended to stage a robbery.
A third female employee hid from the men and called 911. The other two were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for gunshot wounds. One woman shot in the hand, the other had a bullet graze the back of her head.
According to RIT, the women are doing well and have talked to police about the robbery.
Police and RIT officials say they are certain the suspects did not pick out the Crossroads dining facility at random. They believe the suspects had some prior knowledge of the building and knew where they could find cash. The men entered the building through the back.
Police will not say how much money the robbers took or if there are any other witnesses who might have seen the men flee.
The women who were shot were employees, not students. Police don't know if the suspects are students, former employees, or just robbers who spent some time researching this building.
The violence has angered RIT President Dr. Albert Simone, who says the women met every demand from the robbers and did not struggle.
"Why hurt people when you don't have to? Intellectually, I can begin to understand it, but emotionally, I sort of see red. I just do not comprehend that," Simone said.
Simone points out that RIT has added hundreds of lights around campus, as well as blue-light phones to contact security. He also said the college will review adding guarded overnight checkpoints to the roads leading into campus.
Some students said they prefer an open campus and worry that more security would be expensive.
Student Andrew Warnick said, "Adding restrictions on entering campus--that seems like a lot of work because there's a lot of people required to do that, and campus tuition's high enough."
Another student, Peter Kolts, said, "The amount of roads that lead in to campus are just immense, and there's wooded areas, and ways for people to circumvent that anyway."
Dr. Simone said RIT will wait until the suspects are caught, then will decide if new security is needed. Even the most concerned students are trying to stay realistic.
Student Michelle Koplitz said, "I don't think there's a way to stop this. I feel our campus is already isolated as is."

Two cousins are under arrest, accused of shooting two RIT employees October 4.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Department says Dwight Rudley and his cousin, Travis Rudley, are charged with robbery and assault.
Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn says Dwight was a temporary worker with FSS, RIT's food services agency.
O’Flynn says Dwight Rudley had inside knowledge of the routine and operation of the crossroads cafe where the two cafeteria workers were shot.
