According to witnesses, 47-year-old J.W. Hardy Jr. of Carlton, who was dressed in a gray sweat suit and handcuffed behind his back, was leaning against a door as other county employees entered the building. During his apparent good deed, he decided to run.
Police were searching the village when a witness called to say that a man running and wearing handcuffs was seen going into a West Bank Street apartment. The street is located between the Albion Police Department and the Courthouse. Smith said Hardy was cooperative when police found him and didn't resist their effort to take him back to the jail.
Hardy was in court to be sentenced by Judge James Punch for the felony drug charge conviction that could net him up to seven years in prison. His lawyer asked for a delay after learning that he could face more charges. After being caught, Hardy was charged with second-degree escape, a charge that could result in an additional four-year sentence if convicted.
 Judge Punch is a tough judge, I wouldn't want to piss him off.
