ORLANDO, Fla. -- A man accused of posing as a cop is behind bars at the Orange County jail. He was arrested late Thursday night on Colonial Drive. Orlando police stopped him after he allegedly robbed two people and got away with cash.
Timothy Liptrap was just released from prison in September for impersonating an officer. This time, police said, he didn't have a cruiser, a gun, or a badge, just a convincing story.
When Liptrap was taken to jail for allegedly posing as a cop, he was stone-faced and silent. But, Orlando police said, he had a mouthful to say before he robbed two people.
Liptrap allegedly walked up and introduced himself as a police officer. He said he had a warrant for their arrest and needed to see some ID. That's when he allegedly kidnapped one person, picked up another person, robbed them and then he dropped them off.
Police chased him and threw out stop sticks at Liptrap's red Mazda pickup truck. Dennis Farr saw his truck crash by a motel on West Colonial and Putnam Avenue.
"He flipped over near the pole and an officer told him, 'Don't get out of the car,'" Farr said.
This time, Liptrap was the one taking the orders.
"His hands were on the ground and they pointed with their gun and told him to stay where he was," Farr said.
Police didn't find anything on Liptrap that would make people think he was a real officer on him except a black two-way radio. He had no uniform, no badge, no gun, and his truck didn't even have flashing lights.
Still, Liptrap managed to convince at least two people with his story, the same story he may have told others six years ago when he was arrested and convicted for the same deal, impersonating a law enforcement officer.
Police believe that Liptrap drove to Orlando from Crystal River, on the west coast of the state, to rob people for drug money.
Friday, a judge ordered Liptrap held on no bond.
