(Irondequoit, N.Y.)--A man from Webster learned a bitter lesson. The Department of Environmental Conservation says Travis Newbury drove his Chevy Blazer out on Irondequoit Bay last night then got stuck in about four feet of water.
A DEC spokesman says it's not clear why Newbury was out on the ice.
Newbury will have to pay to have the SUV towed and make sure no gasoline is spilled in the process.
It's not uncommon for snowmobiles and all terrain vehicles to go out onto the lake this time of year. However, those vehicles are lighter than cars or trucks.

**UPDATE**
(Irondequoit, N.Y.) -- Snowmobiles and emergency crews worked on removing an SUV from Irondequoit Bay Tuesday, all day Wednesday and into the night.
Travis Newberry, 20, and friends drove the SUV onto the Bay Monday night -- it cracked through the ice and sank in about four feet of icy water. When Newberry and his friends missed their movie, he said they drove around looking for something to do, so they headed to Irondequoit Bay.
"There were tracks that came out...so I figured it was safe…I went on the internet to ask if anyone could help me. This guy came out... the first people to say they would do it," Newberry said.
Crews from Jim's Service Center are on their second day removing the SUV. They’re using chainsaws to break the ice and cables to pull it to shore.
Progress is slow.
“We were going to Monday Night Madness at Movies Ten at West Henrietta Road…and 50 cents turned into thousands of dollars," Newberry said.
Newbury, from Webster, will have to pay to have the SUV elevated and towed —costs are estimated at $5,000 and rising.
