ROME (Reuters) - Italy is finally cracking down on the many fickle pet owners who dump their cat or dog on the roadside as they head to the beach for their summer vacation.

Some 150,000 dogs and 200,000 cats are abandoned in Italy every year -- many of them at the start of summer holidays -- according to animal rights groups. About 85 percent of them are killed by cars, hunger or thirst.

:smt017 How can you just abandon your pet like that? I couldn't imagine taking catagator and leaving her by the side of the road somewhere. That just makes me sick. Damn.

my grandpas farm gets strays like that all the time. someone will pull up on the corner and toss the cat in the yard and then drive away. the cat takes a couple days to fit in and then they're fine. poor things starve in the meantime but they end up alright. There are so many damn cats there now... If it wasn't for the little girls my uncle has now, most of them cats would be fertilizer.
