Mike Doria (Rochester, NY) 07/13/04 -- "For Sale" signs will go up Wednesday in front of the vacant Rochester Psychiatric Center buildings on Elmwood Avenue.
The tallest building, about 15 stories high, has been vacant for eight years. The entire complex contains nearly 650,000 square feet. The buildings need some work and asbestos cleanup.
Wegmans was once interested in the land, but has backed off because the city wouldn't re-zone the property from institutional and educational to commercial; the area's Azalea Neighborhood Association also opposed the supermarket chain citing light and traffic concerns.
The neighbors hope to still have some input into who will move in. Some suggestions include low-intensity housing; smaller scale retail shops, even a military cemetery.
David Day of the association said, "The military is in need of more cemetery space…it would be quiet and would keep the space open."
A meeting about the RPP sale process is scheduled for Thursday, July 15 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Anne Church on Mt. Hope Avenue.
