A newspaper column from our closest big city neighbor, treats Rochester like the neighborhood eyesore.
The commentary in Tuesday’s edition of The Buffalo News says: “Feeling down about Buffalo? Worrying about our unemployment, our struggling schools, our rain? Here’s something to think about to make ourselves feel better: Rochester.
”I don’t agree with this at all,” Mary Ann Barrett of Honeoye Falls said before heading into a concert at the Blue Cross Arena. "The scenery is prettier and there's more culture in Rochester than Buffalo."
The column also says Rochester is “dying an uglier death than Buffalo,” and “Buffalo needs a whipping boy, someone to make us feel that we're not the most pitiful kid on the playground." It was printed a day before thousands of people came to Rochester by the busload for an Irish concert. A very different picture of Rochester than the one portrayed in The Buffalo News.
Joe Sionko read the article at his home in Tonawanda. He says both cities share many of the same problems.
"The histories are about the same," Sionko said. "Kodak and Xerox are going down and It’s same with Buffalo. They've lost industry too."
Attractions like Strong Museum count on Buffalo for out-of-town business. The Greater Rochester Visitors Association says an article like this, hurts.
"For those families who might come to our museums and festivals and events, that probably was a disservice to Rochester,” Greg Marshall with the visitors association said.
“It's an opinion, and we hope people read it as one person's opinion."
Which isn't enough to crush Rochester pride. And like water from the Genesee River….
“I think the people of Rochester will let it roll off their backs," Barrett said.
 Are you fucking kidding me? Bankrupt, dirty, crime and drug ridden Buffalo, slamming Rochester! :rolllaugh
